Do I need to have a “major” problem to come to therapy?

No. Just feeling unhappy or unable to deal with a problem is a good reason to come to therapy. Some people come to address major life issues, but others come to work out day-to-day issues or to help them sort out their feelings. Some people just need to vent, and have no one in their life that they trust to talk to about certain issues.

Is therapy confidential?

Therapy is confidential. The law protects the therapist-client relationship. That means that whatever you tell your therapist is between you and your therapist. Period. You can sign a release of information though, allowing your therapist to communicate with other providers or family members that you choose.

Will my insurance cover the cost of therapy?

We accept most major health insurance and participate in Medicare. Your insurance company will determine if you have a copay and/or deductible and how much that is. Our office staff will call your insurance company and get an authorization for services, and your copay/deductible information. You will receive a call from our office letting you know your services are authorized and exactly how much your copay/deductible is. Your insurance company sets your copay/deductible amount. Some insurance companies have no copay, and some are as low as $5.

How can therapy help me?

Therapists provide emotional support in many different ways. We are skilled professionals and good listeners. We are able to interpret issues in ways that others, such as friends and family cannot do. We teach problem solving skills, and coping skills, which will help you deal with issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship concerns, and family matters, to name a few. We can offer different perspectives on a problem you may be experiencing, and help you figure out a variety of solutions.

What if I don’t feel comfortable with my therapist?

Once you meet with your therapist you will be able to determine if you are comfortable with the clinician assigned to you. If you are not, we can reassign you to someone who may be a better fit for you. You shouldn’t feel bad asking for another therapist. Therapy only works if the relationship is positive.

What if I am undecided about therapy?

It is normal to have concerns about starting something new. Maybe you aren’t convinced therapy will work. Perhaps you are uncertain if you will be able to talk to someone about your thoughts and feelings. If you are thinking, “Nothing can make me feel better…” you may be surprised. It could really make a difference in your life.
